Recent Faculty Activity from the Dauphin Island Sea Lab

Dr. Richard Aronson, Senior Marine Scientist, Dauphin Island Sea Lab (DISL), and Professor of Marine Science, University of South Alabama (USA) received $48,000 from Mobile Bay National Estuary Program for Developing Salt-Marsh Restoration Strategies to Optimize Habitat Use by the Blue Crab, Callinectes sapidus.
Dr. Ruth Carmichael, Senior Marine Scientist, DISL, and Assistant Professor of Marine Science, USA, received $29,000 from the Mobile Bay National Estuary Program for Study of the West Indian manatee population in Mobile Bay, AL: A model for conservation management by integration of research and public outreach.
Drs. Just Cebrian, Rich Aronson, Ken Heck and Sean Powers, DISL and USA, recently received a $1.5 million grant from the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources to conduct for the next three years.
Dr. John Dindo and Lee Yokel have secured a NOAA Coastal Services Center grant for $790,000 to address the Implementation of the Gulf of Mexico Alliance (GOMA) Environmental Education Priorities and Actions.
Drs. Ken Heck, Sean Powers and graduate student Steven Scyphers received $34,000 from the Mobile Bay National Estuary Program for Alternative Methods for Shoreline Stabilization and Habitat Enhancement at Helen Wood Park.
Dr. Behzad Mortazavi, Senior Marine Scientist, DISL and Assistant Professor and Director of the University of Alabama M.S. Degree Program in the Marine Sciences. received $714,000 from NSF for collaborative research for Cold-season gas exchange of arctic plants - resolving winter carbon and water balances of Alaskan arctic tundra. His collaborator is Dr. Greg Starr at the University of Alabama.
