Recent sightings of manatees in Mobile Bay waters this winter make it more crucial than ever to alert the public to report sightings of these creatures to the Mobile Bay Manatee Sighting Network at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab at:

Although frequently seen in warmer months, manatees have been spotted in coastal Alabama and Mississippi this year during the colder winter months. These unusual sightings have prompted Sea Lab scientists to react quickly, but attempts to locate these animals have often been unsuccessful.
“We rely on the public’s prompt reporting of these manatees,” said Senior Marine Scientist Dr. Ruth Carmichael. “Too often we hear second or third-hand about sightings, and by the time the report reaches us, it’s too late to locate the animal and make sure it is not in distress. If an animal is in distress such as from cold shock, time is critical to coordinate a relocation and reduce the risk of death.”
“When sightings are reported to the toll-free number as soon as possible, we have a great advantage,” she added. Information such as the time and location of the sighting, the number of manatees, any distinguishing marks and their behavior at the time of the sighting is critical. Federal laws prevent harassment (altering behavior) of manatees, and Dr. Carmichael advises the public to stay at least 100 feet away from them.
