He was previously Associate Dean for Marine Science Programs and Marine Lab Director at Humboldt State University in Arcata, California.

University of South Alabama President V. Gordon Moulton, Chair of the Sea Lab’s Executive Committee, stated that arrangements are being made to appoint an Interim Director until a new Executive Director is found.

“We are shocked and saddened by Dr. Quackenbush’s death,” he said.  “Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family at this sorrowful time.”

"Dr. Quackenbush was a very creative person and we were looking forward to him implementing his new ideas at the Sea Lab."

Dr. Quackenbush, a native of Baltimore, Maryland, is survived by his wife, Dr. Teri Butler, a science teacher at Theodore High School, and children Ben, 20; Seth, 18; and Hannah, 15.

A memorial service is planned for Saturday, October 18, at 3:00pm at Dauphin Island United Methodist Church.  In lieu of flowers, the family is asking that donations be made to the Dauphin Island Sea Lab Foundation, PO Box 438, Dauphin Island, AL 36528.  Dr. Quackenbush was a Trustee of the DISL Foundation.
