Dr. John J. Dindo Named Interim Director
of the Dauphin Island Sea Lab

Dauphin Island, Alabama

The Board of Directors of the Dauphin Island Sea Lab has named Dr. John J.
Dindo, Chair of K-12 Education and Public Outreach at the Dauphin Island Sea
Lab (DISL), and long-time Assistant to the Director, as Interim Director,
effective December 17. The Sea Lab’s current Executive Director, Dr. George
F. Crozier, will retire at the end of 2007.

Dindo has been with the Sea Lab for over 30 years, arriving as a graduate
student in 1975. He became Director of Discovery Hall Programs, the Sea Lab’s
K-12 Education and Public Outreach Programs, in 1979.

Dindo earned his Ph.D. from the University of Alabama, Birmingham in 1991.
His research interests include marine vertebrate ecology, avian breeding
ecology, and predator-prey relationships in avian fauna.

Governor Bob Riley named Dindo an Outdoor Ambassador for the state of Alabama
in 2006. That year, Dindo also received the Outstanding Alumni Award from the
University of Alabama at Birmingham’s School of Natural Sciences and
Mathematics where he earned his master’s and Ph.D.

Dr. Dindo will serve as Interim Director until the Board of Director names a
new Executive Director, for which the search is currently in progress. The
current Chair of the Board of Directors is President V. Gordon Moulton,
University of South Alabama.
