The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) School of Natural Sciences
and Mathematics is honoring three of its outstanding alumni and the
accomplishments of its student scholars at its 2006 Scholarship and
Awards Luncheon, noon Tuesday, Jan. 26, at the Alys Stephens Center on
the UAB campus, 1200 10th Ave. S.
One of the honorees is Dr. John Dindo, Senior Marine Scientist at the
Dauphin Island Sea Lab. Dr. Dindo earned his master’s and Ph.D. in
biology from UAB in 1979 and 1991, respectively. He has been involved in
Alabama’s outdoor industry as an educator, scientist and sportsman for

Coastal Birding Trail in Alabama. He also created and continues to
manage the award-winning K-12 program Discovery Hall at the Dauphin
Island Sea Lab and The Estuarium, the Sea Lab’s public aquarium. In
2000, he received the prestigious James Centorino Award from the
National Marine Educators Association (NMEA), a recognition given for
distinguished performance in marine education by non-classroom teaching
professionals. He also was recently named one of the Mobile Bay area’s
Outdoor Ambassadors for 2006.
The other honorees are Milton Brown, Ph.D., associate professor of
