Marine Scientists at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab

Dr. Rich Aronson, Senior Marine Scientist, Dauphin Island Sea Lab (DISL) and Professor of Marine Sciences, University of South Alabama (USA), received a grant of $21,000 from the National Geographic Society for “Land use and reef development in Central America.”

Dr. Just Cebrian, Senior Marine Scientist, DISL and Assistant Professor of Marine Sciences, USA, received $145,000 from the Bank of Bilbao-Vizcaya-Argentaria Foundation in Spain for “Seagrass conservation: causes of seagrass decline and effects on ecosystem functioning.”

Dr. Ken Heck, Senior Marine Scientist, DISL and Professor of Marine Sciences, USA, received a grant of $157,797 from the National Science Foundation for “Undergratuate Research Experiences in Coastal and Nearshore Marine Systems of the Northeastern Gulf of Mexico.”

Dr. Heck was also recently in Australia where he gave a talk at the Commonwealth, Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO) laboratory in Perth on "Predicting the effects of eutrophication on Seagrass Meadows. He also gave a talk at Edith Cowan University in Joondalup, Western Australia on "Plant-animal interactions in Seagrass Meadows".

Dr. John Valentine, Senior Marine Scientist, DISL and Associate Professor of Marine Sciences, USA, received $140,000 from the Alabama Center for Estuarine Research for “Invasion Ecology: Effects of Habitat Alteration on the Survival of an Exotic Species.” He also received $150,000 from the USEPA Gulf of Mexico Program for “Environmental Assessment of Hydrological Modifications on Ecosystem Function in lower Mobile Tensaw Delta.”
