Weathering the Storm: How Hurricanes Impact the Environment
As we recover from Hurricane Katrina, local environmental agencies, led
by the Mobile Bay National Estuary Program (MBNEP), have joined forces
to present Estuary Live 2005 from the Dauphin Island Sea Lab on Friday,
September 23, 2005 at 10:00 CST. This program is designed to give
teachers and students an opportunity to enter a coastal environmental
without ever leaving the classroom. Students can formulate questions and
have them answered live by the specialists on the program. There will be
five estuary locations from around the country.
Originally scheduled in Moss Point, Mississippi through the Grand Bay
National Estuarine Research Reserve, the program from the Gulf Coast was
to have featured “marshian invaders,” or exotic species that reek havoc
in our local estuaries. Due to Hurricane Katrina damage at the Grand Bay
Reserve facility, the program was moved to the Dauphin Island Sea Lab
where scientists will spend the hour discussing weather, storms, and
their impact on the natural environment. Students will see a data logger
that survived from Moss Point, Mississippi, an injured Pelican,
demonstrations on surge, and a display on how to prepare for a storm and
more.
Live Location: Dauphin Island Sea Lab Horizon Hall
Date: Friday, September 23, 2005
Time: 10:00 CST and 12:10 CST
The program is free. To register for the program simply go to

around the country are signed up to watch Estuary Live.
