Five Area Students to Travel to Washington, DC
To Advise on National Ocean Policy

On January 14-16, 2004, five area high school students will travel to Washington, DC to add their views and recommendations on national ocean stewardship to a top panel of federal agencies that comprise the US Commission on Ocean Policy.

Chosen by the Dauphin Island Sea Lab, a Coastal Ecosystem Learning Center, these five students and an area educator will enter a crash course in coastal zone management between now and January. Dr. George Crozier, Executive Director of the Sea Lab, and Dr. John Dindo, Chair of K-12 Educational Programs, will guide these participants through site visits along the Gulf Coast, lectures and workshops on coastal management and policy presentation. Their goal will be to present their recommendations on ocean stewardship for the Gulf Coast Region.

In January, the group will travel to Washington to attend a National Student Summit on Ocean Issues, sponsored by Coastal America and National Geographic. There, they will participate in a planning committee that will craft a Summit Agenda on their recommendations and comments on the Ocean Commissionıs draft Ocean Policy Report; they will present their findings to a panel of national experts from the federal government, the Pew Commission and the U.S. Ocean Commissioners.

Admiral Lautenbacher, NOAA Administrator, and Jim Connaughton, Chairman of the White House Council on Environmental Quality, are scheduled to attend the Summit.
