Dr. Richard Aronson, Senior Marine
Scientist, Dauphin Island Sea Lab (DISL) and Professor of Marine
Sciences at the University of South Alabama (USA), gave two invited
lectures on "What is Happening on Caribbean Coral Reefs?" to the
Department of Biology at the University of Houston and the Department of
Geology at the University of Cincinnati.
Dr. Just Cebrian, Senior Marine Scientist, DISL, and Assistant
Professor of Marine Sciences at USA received a two-year grant from
Mississippi-Alabama Sea Grant Consortium (MASGC) for $199,383 for
"Effects of anthropogenic eutrophication on the ecosystem services
provided by shoalgrass (Halodule wrightii) meadows."
Dr. George Crozier, Executive Director of DISL, received a
$30,000 grant from the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural
Resources, Coastal Programs for continuation of the Sea Labšs technical
support program.
Dr. John Dindo, Senior Marine Scientist DISL and Chair of K-12
Programs, and Marine Educator Kirsten Patterson received $78,569
from the State Department of Education under the No Child Left Behind
Act for "MAST -Marine Application of Science and Technology." The grant
will provide for three workshops that help educators infuse math and
technology into their basic science classes.
Dr. Dindo also presented a seminar for Leadership Coastal Alabama on
"Natural Resources of the Mobile Bay Estuary."
Dr. Monty Graham, Senior Marine Scientist, DISL and Associate
Professor of Marine Sciences, USA, and DISL postdoctoral fellow Dr.
Toby Bolton received a two-year grant from MASGC for $202,587 for "A
molecular genetic assay for identifying and quantifying a cryptic marine
bioinvader."
Dr. Graham also gave two invited talks to College of William and Mary's
Virginia
Institute of Marine Sciences and to the University of Floridašs
Department of Fisheries and Aquatic
Sciences. Both talks were titled 'Uncovering the history of an alien
jellyfish in the Gulf of Mexico'.
Dr. Bob Shipp, Senior Marine Scientist, DISL and Chairman of the
Department of Marine Sciences, USA, was recently in Washington, DC,
serving on an invited panel sponsored by the National Oceanic and
Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) on "Managing our Nation's Fisheries."
