The following senior marine scientists from the Dauphin Island Sea Lab
will be presenting papers at the 17th Biennial Conference of the
International Estuarine Research Federation in Seattle Washington from
September 14th to 18th:
Dr. Kenneth L. Heck will present "Predicting the effects of
eutrophication on seagrass meadows: the importance of manipulative
experiments and the underappreciated role of algal herbivores."
Dr. Sean Powers will present "Biological and economic value of
restored oyster reef habitat to the nursery function of estuaries."
Dr. John Valentine will present "Trophic exchange at the coral
reef-seagrass interface: a multitrophic level test of effects of
overfishing on coral reef food webs."
Additionally, Dr. Monty Graham has been invited to serve as a
professional mentor at DIALOG (Dissertations Initiative for the
Advancement of Limnology and Oceanography), which is a capstone program
to bring together biologically oriented PhDs across the full range of
aquatic science. The program is international in scope. Recent PhDs are
targeted in order to introduce graduates to the community, catalyze
interdisciplinary understanding, enhance early career development and
foster collegial interactions. DIALOG V is being held in Bermuda in
October 2003.
Dr. Graham has also been invited to participate in a National Science
Foundation workshop on Biocomplexity that will be a think-tank session
on bringing Natural and Social Sciences together. Biocomplexity tries
to couple complex biological systems with complex human systems. The
workshop will be held at the Wright Institute of Marine Science on
Catalina Island on October 3-6, 2003. |
