Marine science education is a field traditionally underrepresented by minority students, both as instructors and students. The Dauphin Island Sea Lab and Shell Oil Foundation are addressing this issue by offering three teacher internships to college students this summer. Will Bolds of the University of South Alabama, and Shannon Broughton and Harold Francis, both of Alabama State University, are currently student-teaching this summer at the Sea Lab.

For nine weeks, these interns will be learning new educational techniques, offering their own skills, and serving as mentors for the dozens of elementary, middle and high schools students that participate in the Sea Labıs various summer programs.

"This innovative internship is almost like marine science education boot-camp for these participants," said Dr. John Dindo, Chairman of Dauphin Island Sea Labıs Public Outreach Programs. "Theyıll be doing field trips, curriculum-planning, hands-on education and interacting with lively groups of students and the general public. We hope these three young people will continue their interest in marine science education and, indeed, serve as a resource to their fellow students."

Shell Exploration & Production Company, based in New Orleans and Houston, is making this Dauphin Island Sea Lab contribution on behalf of its Yellowhammer Gas Plant located in nearby Coden, Alabama.
