Grant from ExxonMobil
The Dauphin Island Sea Lab recently received a grant for $29,500 from
ExxonMobil in support of the Labıs educational and research programs.
The funds will go to assisting graduate students in their research
activities; promoting BayMobile, the travelling marine science classroom
of the Sea Lab; and sustaining other marine science outreach efforts.
Senior Marine Scientist presentation
Dr. William Schroeder, a Senior Marine Scientist at the Dauphin Island
Sea Lab and Professor of Marine Science Program at The University of
Alabama, presented a paper on "Seepage, carbonates, and cold-water
corals in the Gulf of Mexico" in a special session on "Geosphere/biosphere
coupling: Carbonate mounds and cold water corals" at the April 2003
EGS-AGU-EUG Joint Assembly, in Nice, France.
He also was one of the co-authors of a paper presented by a colleague
from Florida State University titled "Fresh water export and riverine
influence in the northern Gulf of Mexico."
Graduate Students receive grants
Derrick Blackmon, a Ph.D. student at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab,
recently was awarded a PADI Award grant for $900 for his research
project, "Nocturnal emergence: A predatory escape response of small
invertebrates from lower order reef fish in the Florida Keys."
Nancy Hilbun, also a Ph.D student at the Sea Lab, was awarded a
scholarship from the International Women's Fishing Association in the
amount of $500.00.
Graduate Students present papers at GERS Conference
Graduate students from the Dauphin Island Sea Lab recently participated
in the Gulf Estuarine Research Society (GERS) Conference in Port
Aransas, Texas. Alina Corcoran, Carolanne Russell, Amy Hunter, and Matt
Johnson all gave presentations. |
