DockWatch Receives Spotted Jellyfish Sighting

June 27, 2002

DockWatch, the jellyfish monitoring program of the Dauphin Island Sea Lab, received a
reliable sighting of a multitude of spotted jellyfish, Phyllorhiza punctata, in Terrabonne
Bay, Louisiana.

Popularly known as the "Australian spotted jellyfish," these exotic invaders were first
recognized in the Gulf of Mexico in 2000. This current sighting reports the jellies from
two-inches to one-foot in diameter.

The spotted jellyfish appeared in Terrabonne Bay last year, but were not confirmed at that
time in Alabama.
