The Alabama Coastal Foundation (ACF), a non-profit environmental
organization, and the Dauphin Island Sea Lab (DISL) have come together
to
sponsor an annual Dauphin Island Scholarship Fund. This scholarship will
be rewarded to a college student that is interested in furthering their
education in environmental and ecological studies.
The first ever recipient of the scholarship was recently awarded to
Allison
Odom of Mobile, AL. Allison is an upcoming junior at Jacksonville State
University majoring in Biology and wants to pursue a career in Fisheries
after graduation. Tom Hutchings, president of ACF, recently stated, "we
are
lucky to have such a dedicated young woman who wishes to continue her
education in environmental and biological sciences." When asked about
her
reaction to receiving the scholarship, Allison responded, "I was just
ecstatic
because I knew it was going to be hard for me to pay for everything down
here [DISL]." Allison offers this advice to other college students that
were in
her position before receiving the scholarship, "Just keep trying because
if
you work hard enough you will get where you want to be, but you have to
push yourself because no one is going to just hand it to you on a silver
platter."
The scholarship will allow Allison to attend two summer sessions at the
Sea
Lab; Marine Invertebrate Zoology and Marine Vertebrate Zoology. If
anyone is interested in providing donations for the Dauphin Island
Scholarship Fund, please contact the ACF office at 251-990-6002.
