FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: April 9, 2001
(Dauphin Island, Alabama)

The Wiese Distinguished Lecture Series has named South African zoologist Dr. John Field
as its Distinguished Lecturer for 2001. This endowed lecture series is a gift from Fairhope
resident Mr. Peter Wiese, and is sponsored by the Dauphin Island Sea Lab and the
Department of Marine Sciences at the University of South Alabama.

As part of the Lecture Series, Dr. Field will give a free talk to the public on Wednesday,
April 25, 2001, at the Humanities Auditorium, Room 170 on the University of
South Alabama Campus. The talk will begin at 4:00 PM. The lecture is titled, "The
Benguela Upwelling System: From Physics to Fish." The Benguela is a major ocean current
that runs off the coast of South Africa and is responsible for the "upwelling" transport of
nutrient-rich, deep ocean water into the lighted surface waters where plankton can thrive.
Such upwelling systems support some of the world's richest fisheries.

Dr. Field was a pioneer in the development of mathematical models used to study food
web interactions in marine ecosystems. He is interested in all levels of the food web, and
has published over 85 important papers covering the roles of bacteria, phytoplankton,
kelp, benthic (bottom dwelling) invertebrates and fish in ecosystems all around the world.

Dr. Field is a prominent member of the global ocean research community and has served
as the head of several international programs, most recently the Scientific Committee on
Oceanic Research (SCOR). In these leadership roles he has guided international research
programs to provide a better understanding of how global climate change will impact the
oceans and, in turn, how the oceans will impact the climate system.
