On Thursday, September 13, at 10:30am, you and your class can go on-line
live and chat with Leslie Wallace, a junior at Waverly Central High
School in Waverly, TN and Barbara Staten, a teacher at the Arnold School
in Mobile. Both Ms. Wallace and Ms. Staten are participating in Project
SEAS while aboard the R/V Pelican, a research vessel that is cruising
the Northern Gulf of Mexico.
Project SEAS, or Science Education at Sea, is under the supervision of
Dr. Monty Graham, a Senior Marine Scientist at the Dauphin Island Sea
Lab. In this program, students and teachers join Sea Lab scientists for
portions of a research cruise. While on the cruise these students and
educators will be gaining invaluable hands-on experience in marine
research.
Not only will they be designing and implementing their own scientific
research, they'll be sharing their day-to-day experiences of life on a
cruise vessel, and the details of their field-based science work on an
interactive Web site. The Web-based information can be accessed by other
classes and schools to aid learning about the scientific process.

By lowering the traditional barriers between research and education,
this program hopes to illuminate the scientific process, and enable a
better understanding for those teaching and learning about science.
Check out how you and your class can chat with Ms. Wallace and Ms.
Staten by going to the Project SEAS website at http://www.seasproject.org. |
