Contact: Dauphin Island Sea Lab Lisa Young 334/861-7509 On Monday, August 27, while Sea Lab scientists and marine technicians are loading the research vessel, R/V Pelican, for a three-week scientific cruise in the Northern Gulf of Mexico, high school students Carter Johnson and Leslie Wallace, and science teacher Barbara Staten will be preparing for the trip of a lifetime. Mr. Johnson, Ms. Wallace and Ms. Staten are participants in the Sea Lab's Project Seas - Science Education at Sea. Joining the scientists for portions of the cruise, these students and educator will be gaining invaluable hands-on experience in marine research. Not only will they be designing and implementing their own scientific research, they'll be sharing their day-to-day experiences of life on a cruise vessel, and the details of their field-based science work on an interactive Web site. The Web-based information can be accessed by other classes and schools to aid learning about the scientific process. (http://www.seasproject.org). By lowering the traditional barriers between research and education, this program hopes to illuminate the scientific process, and enable a better understanding for those teaching and learning about science. The research cruise and Project SEAS is under the supervision of Dr. Monty Graham, Senior Marine Scientist at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab and Assistant Professor of Marine Sciences at the University of South Alabama. … Carter Johnson is a junior at Murphy High School in Mobile, AL. He will be joining the cruise September 2-9. … Leslie Wallace is a junior at Waverly Central High School in Waverly, TN, She will be on the cruise September 9-18. … Barbara Staten teaches at the Arnold School in Mobile.
