Dr. John Dindo, Chair of K-12 Education and Public Outreach at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab, has received two
prestigious grants to educate teachers and students about the ecological impact of aquatic and non-aquatic indigenous species.  The spread of these species has had enormous local and national consequence, ranging from the pesky fire ant to the ever-encroaching kudzu to the newly topical Australian jellyfish.

National Sea Grant and the Southeast Regional Aquatic Nuisance Species (ANS) Education and Outreach Network has awarded him $262,298 for the years 2002-2003. In a cooperative program with Dr. Howard Walters of the J.L. Scott Marine Education Center in Biloxi, MS, and Dr. Mike Spranger of the Florida Sea Grant Education Program, Dr. Dindo will implement a two-part program. The first segment will be on-site workshops for teachers at the Sea Lab, J.L. Scott Center and Florida Sea Grant.

The second will be outreach programs for students in schools throughout the state of Alabama. Educators will visit classrooms to teach students about the history, problems and challenges of exotic species in our waters and other ecosystems. These programs will be implemented late this year and throughout 2002/2003.

A more immediate grant was awarded Dr. Dindo for teacher workshops scheduled at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab this fall. The Mississippi-Alabama Sea Grant Consortium has awarded Dr. Dindo $82,256 for the years 2001-2002. These workshops will incorporate scientific knowledge of non-indigenous species and feature classroom curriculum for K-12 students. The grant will include tuition, room, board and curriculum materials for teachers; partial travel money to the Sea Lab will also be provided.

These workshops on "Alien Species of the Gulf of Mexico" are scheduled for September 19-22 and October 24-27, 2001.  For more information on the teacher workshops, or the school visit programs, please contact:  Denise Keaton
