Dr. John Valentine, Senior Marine Scientist at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab and Assistant Professor of Marine Sciences at the University of South Alabama, has recently received a prestigious National Marine Fisheries Service grant in the amount of $183,000 for the period of 2001-2003.

His research will focus on protected, or "no-take," areas in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary. What are the direct and indirect effects of these areas; and does increased predator fish populations have an effect on coral reefs and seagrass habitats? This research will help inform scientists, managers and conservationists about the importance of linkages among habitats and landscape-scale considerations in the design of tropical marine reserves.
