Dr. George Crozier, Executive Director of the Dauphin Island Sea Lab received $100,000 in a one-time grant for operational expenses from Governor Don Siegelman in Montgomery on Wednesday, August 30.

The Dauphin Island Sea Lab is the state of Alabamašs marine education and research center. Earlier this year, the Sea Labšs budget appropriation was reduced by $200,000 due to competing demands for funds.

Efforts by Mobile County Commissioner Gary Tanner and Conservation and Natural Resources Commissioner Riley Boykin Smith resulted in this one-time award by the Governor to partially ease the budget crisis facing the Sea Lab.

Dr. Crozier said, "I am deeply grateful to Commissioners Tanner and Smith and to Governor Siegelman for this boost in our budget. Many of the educational programs at the Sea Lab were at risk because of the appropriations cut, and this award will assist us in providing the students and teachers of the state the quality science programs they deserve, at least for the coming year.

"This recognition from the Governoršs office certainly reflects his appreciation of the fact that we are actively contributing to his efforts at redefining the State's image in science and education".

Governor Siegelman stated, "I am committed to providing Alabama children with the education and opportunities that they deserve," Siegelman said. "The Dauphin Island Sea Lab provides our children with experiences that will impact their lives in a very positive way. I am pleased to support the Lab with this grant."
