The Dauphin Island Sea Lab will be taking its marine specimen show on the road,
thanks to a $100,000 grant from ExxonMobil to fund "BayMobile," a travelling touch
lab. Now school kids and civic groups throughout the state of Alabama can have the
experience of petting a shark or stroking an octopus, and learning all about the
fundamentals of marine and pure science.
BayMobile is planned to be a marine educational outreach program that takes coastal
Alabama flora, fauna, and issues to schools throughout the state. Its mission is to use
coastal examples to help teach the principles of science to students who might never
have an opportunity to visit the coast. Live specimens, static exhibits and curriculum
materials will be carried aboard the BayMobile truck and presented to individual
classes in large seminar presentations.
Dr. John Dindo, Chair of the Sea Lab's K-12 and teacher education programs, states,
"BayMobile will not only enhance the understanding of our watershed issues, but it will
also enlighten students, teachers, and adults to resources available along Alabama's
shoreline. Thanks to this generous donation from ExxonMobil, new audiences will have
a chance to experience real hands-on science education - lessons so fun, they'll last a
lifetime."
"The Dauphin Island Sea Lab is an Alabama treasure - a first-rate research and
educational facility. The Sea Lab staff is dedicated to sound science and sound
education. We are delighted to help extend that treasure to children who can't visit the
Lab on Dauphin Island," states Monte Olson, Operations Superintendent of Mobile
Bay Operations of ExxonMobil Production Company.
The Sea Lab would like to acknowledge Alabama Power for their original seed
grant in formulating the concept of BayMobile.
