Dr. Richard Aronson, Senior Marine Scientist, Dauphin Island Sea Lab and Associate Professor of Marine Sciences at the University of South Alabama, recently received a $4,000 grant from National Geographic to investigate the effects of Hurricane Keith on the coral reefs of Belize.

Dr. Aronson's recent Nature (May 4, 2000) paper on global warming and coral bleach-out in Belize received national media coverage and was cited by President Clinton in a speech on the need to protect the oceans (May 26, 2000 remarks, Assateague Island, Maryland).

His work of several years on coral reefs in Belize has been funded by National Geographic, the National Science Foundation, the Smithsonian Institute and the University of South Alabama.
