Contact: Lisa Young 334/861-7509 The topic won't be pelicans but penguins on Thursday, November 16, at the Fairhope K-1 Center's Pelican's Nest. Dauphin Island Sea Lab Senior Marine Scientist Dr. Richard Aronson will be visiting his "Penguin Pen Pals" on that day to brief them on his upcoming December 2000 trip to Antarctica. While at the "frozen South" Dr. Aronson will be exchanging e-mails with his eager correspondents, telling them all about his adventures and answering their scientific inquiries. Upon his return he plans to de-brief them about his trip and show them the specimens he will have collected. This is Dr. Aronson's third trip to Antarctica, and his second time participating in this educational project with the students of the Pelican's Nest. This program between the Sea Lab and the Pelican's Nest has fired the imagination of these young students, as shown last week when the Sea Lab's Dr. Just Cebrian gave a presentation on seagrass environments and their inhabitants. Charlene Dindo, Director, Pelican's Nest states, "I'm excited about this wonderful collaboration between the Sea Lab and the Pelican's Nest, bringing world-renowned researchers to share their work with young, budding scientists. These researchers' work directly relates to the students' coastal habitat here in Baldwin County. Additionally, it gives them a dose of technology via the Internet as they compare and contrasts different ecosystems and habitats. For example, this visit by Dr. Aronson enhances their study units on Antarctica; Dr. Cebrian's visit reinforced their field trips down to the bay. Plus, both the students and the scientists have a wonderful time interacting with each other." Dr. Aronson adds,
"As a researcher, I see these types of programs as essential to
good science. What can be
more rewarding than educating a new generation of scientists about the
wonders of our environment? What's great about the Pelican's Nest is
that it offers these exciting, hands-on opportunities that spark these
students' inquisitive natures." For more information, contact Ms. Charlene Dindo, Pelican's Nest Science Lab, 334/990-2230 or e-mail her at pelicann@gulftel.com. Pelican's
