The Fall season heralds Coastweeks to the nation, celebrating and educating the public about our environmental heritage of the coast.  In our local area, Coastweeks is celebrated by a series of public events, starting with the Thirteenth Annual Coastal Clean-up, which this year was one of the most successful ever. Other events include:

Coastweeks Poster Contest

Judging on Thursday, September 28, 4pm at the Gulf Coast Exploreum

Mobile and Baldwin County 4th and 5th graders have been combining their artistic abilities and environmental knowledge to create works of art for this poster contest. This year's theme is "Mobile Bay Estuary - Our Treasure Chest." Twelve winners will receive a gift bag of environmental "goodies" from participating agencies. Contest entrants will receive free admission to the Gulf Coast Exploreum's Exhibit Hall, with every paid adult admission.

BayFest Environmental Fair

Saturday, October 7, 11am to 5pm - Children's Activity Center

Want to stuff a fish? Or pet a shark? How about learning about animal tracks? Kids at BayFest will have an opportunity to do all this and more at the Environmental Fair, where activities will focus on learning about the environment and having fun, too. The Dauphin Island Sea Lab's Touch Lab will continue its interactive display on Sunday, October 8.

Coastweeks sponsors: Alabama Coastal Foundation, ADECA Coastal Programs, Auburn University Marine Extension and Research Center, Dauphin Island Sea Lab, Environmental Studies Center, Lewis Communications, Mississippi-Alabama Sea Grant Consortium, Mobile Bay National Estuary Program, Phenolchemie, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Weeks Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve
