One hundred students, participants in the University of Alabama at Birmingham's (UAB) Honor Program, will descend on the campus of the Dauphin Island Sea Lab to learn about the environmental microcosm of the barrier island.  The Honors Program will be at the Sea Lab from Sunday, Sept. 17 to Thursday, Sept. 21.

The Honors Program is an interdisciplinary course that focuses on natural science. This year's theme is "The Environment: Earth, Air, Fire and Water." Their visit to the Sea Lab will be complemented by their other major "out-of-class" activity, designing and constructing an outdoor environmental education center at the Richard Arrington Middle School in Birmingham.

While at the Sea Lab, students will hear lectures by Sea Lab and visiting faculty on the history and challenges of Dauphin Island. They will also engage in a range of field-based activities, including a research cruise in Mobile Bay, an instructional beach and maritime forest hike, and a salt marsh seine.
