The Dauphin Island Sea Lab proved a popular campus to hold courses this summer for faculty and students from the University of Alabama, Birmingham. Instructors taught three courses at the Sea Lab, located on a barrier island off the Gulf of Mexico.

Kids and the Coast

Dr. Barbara Lewis of the Department of Science Education organized a class of graduate students, along with selected undergraduates, to spend three days of learning ways to bring marine science into their science curricula. Nineteen teachers took part in field and lab activities for graduate credit. Teachers learned new tactile and experiential projects to enliven their own lessons in biology, botany and environmental studies.

This course took advantage of its marine location by using marine invertebrates and vertebrates to study neuroanatomy and neurophysiology. Faculty and teaching assistants busily assembled a highly sophisticated laboratory for students on the Sea Lab campus. This popular class among advanced undergraduates and graduate students has been coming down to Dauphin Island for the past three years.
