Dr. John Valentine, Senior Marine Scientist at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab, has recently received a Nature Conservancy Ecosystem Research Program grant, funded by the A.W. Mellon Foundation.  This program was developed to foster working partnerships between the Conservancy and the research community by supporting research of the highest caliber on those ecosystems targeted for conservation.

Dr. Valentine will receive $180,000 over two years for his project on examining the effect of marine reserves called "no-take" zones on food webs.  His research will focus on the direct and indirect effects these protected areas and High school and college students have a chance to both enjoy summer's balmy beaches and to learn about the wonders of marine science at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab.  The 2000 Summer Programs have much to offer students, ranging from field experiences in the Gulf of Mexico to lectures by a roster of distinguished scientists from around the country.
