Contact: Lisa Young 334/861-7509 High school and college students have a chance to both enjoy summer's balmy beaches and to learn about the wonders of marine science at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab. The 2000 Summer Programs have much to offer students, ranging from field experiences in the Gulf of Mexico to lectures by a roster of distinguished scientists from around the country. High School Students -- Discovery Hall Programs Summer Course Discovery Hall Programs of the Dauphin Island Sea Lab offer two four-week sessions in the summer for high school students throughout the nation. The first session will start on Sunday, June 4. Students live on the Sea Lab campus and participate in over 170 hours of lectures, field studies, research projects, and written and practical exams. This intensive course introduces students to physical and chemical oceanography, marine ecology and marine biology. The Alabama State Department of Education approves this course and recommends that local school systems grant credit toward a Standard or Advanced High School Diploma. The deadline for application for the first session is May 12. For more information, contact Denise Keaton at 334/861-7515 or e-mail dkeaton@disl.org College and Graduate Students -- University Programs Summer Course University Programs of the Sea Lab offer a wide range of courses for credit for undergraduates and graduate students during the summer, ranging from Marine Conservation Biology to Coastal Climatology to Marine Fish Diseases. Courses in this intense program will be offered from May to August; individualized directed research opportunities with resident faculty are also available. Sessions will run May 15-June 9; June 12-July 14; and July 17-August 18. The deadline for priority application is February 1.
