World famous oceanographer Jeremy Jackson is known for his
ground-breaking research on “shifting baselines,” or determining just
what is natural in the world’s oceans. His recent articles in “Science”
stress that what is widely considered “natural” is based on personal
experience, rather than historical and paleoecological records. Human
impact, such as overfishing, has irrevocably altered what was once
pristine habitat. He states, “Understanding what was natural is
important not just for historical curiosity, but for rational management
and conservation of coastal oceans in the future.”
Dr. Jackson is a Fellow at the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and
at the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He is a
Member of the Board of the World Wildlife Fund.
The Wiese Disinguished Lecture Series is endowed through the generosity
of Fairhope, Alabama residents Pete and Marty Wiese, supporters of
marine science education and research along the Gulf Coast. The mission
of the Lecture Series is to bring in nationally- and
internationally-renowned scientists to present a public lecture and to
exchange ideas with the faculty and graduate students of the University
of South Alabama and the Dauphin Island Sea Lab.
This lecture is sponsored by the Department of Marine Sciences,
University of South Alabama and the Dauphin Island Sea Lab.
