JOB TITLE:                           Marine Technician

ANNUAL SALARY:             $28,000-32,000, based on experience, includes benefits

BACKGROUND:      The successful applicant will replace a military reserve person currently on active duty for a period of two years only.  This is professional work providing technical support to research scientists, educators and their students.  Duties are diverse and often demanding, requiring long hours in the field installing and repairing instruments and equipment.  Anticipated start date is as soon as possible.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:  B.S. in basic science or engineering and one year experience or AA degree with marine major and two years experience or three years experience as described below.

DUTIES:        Perform technical field and laboratory tasks required for marine environmental research projects including organizing and staging interdisciplinary field exercises, assemble and maintain stocks of required equipment and supplies, keep neat organized records of procedures and data, and operate vehicles, outboard motorboats and/or laboratory equipment in a safe manner.     

PREFERRED SKILLS:        The ideal candidate should have the ability to maintain, deploy and retrieve hydrographic equipment, operate and maintain analytical instrumentation and have working knowledge of coastal and marine ecosystems of the Gulf of Mexico.  Candidates also need to possess excellent verbal and written communication skills; be able to interact appropriately with a wide variety of people; possess skill in executing multiple projects simultaneously; be willing to work under adverse climatic conditions and have the ability to exercise judgment and discretion.  Preference will be given to candidates with open water SCUBA certification, ability to construct, plumb and maintain re-circulating aquaculture systems, and experience with basic electronics.
