Internship position in marine science

Paid 12-month Internship Position in Marine Science
A paid internship is currently available in the Dauphin Island Sea Lab Biological Oceanography Lab. The position offers recently graduated or senior undergraduate students the opportunity to engage in the active study of jellyfish and zooplankton ecology. The successful applicant will primarily work on a meta-analysis project examining global trends in gelatinous plankton blooms and their impact on the environment and society. Activities will include data management, metadata creation, reviewing and extracting data from literature, and occasional field sample collections aboard a 23’ vessel in the northern Gulf of Mexico, along with various technical applications of biological oceanography and zooplankton ecology.

There will also be opportunities to learn other ecological field sampling techniques in a variety of marine environments. In addition, interns are encouraged to attend seminars on current topics in marine science hosted at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab and at the University of South Alabama.

Housing is available either on or off DISL’s campus. The position requires valid driver’s license, clean driving record, the ability to lift light loads and to work on small boats in sometimes inclement weather and sea conditions.

Duration of the internship is up to 12 months with a flexible start date during February 2011.

We are seeking people who are committed and enthusiastic about marine science and may be considering marine science as a career.

Preferred Skills
Experience managing and working with data using Microsoft Access, Microsoft Excel, and text editing software is preferred, although not necessary. Applicants are expected to be enthusiastic about marine research and detail-oriented. This is a great opportunity for hands-on training in the field and laboratory.
