PNC Donates $10,000 for High School Summer Program Scholarships
at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab

Feb 11, 2013

The PNC Foundation recently donated $10,000 to the Dauphin Island Sea Lab
(DISL) Foundation to provide scholarships for high school students applying to
the Sea Lab’s Discovery Hall Programs summer program.

The High School Summer Program takes place over June 2-28, 2013, and is
currently accepting applications until the April 12 deadline. This residential
program offers over 150 hours of supervised academic activities in marine
science disciplines ranging from oceanography to taxonomy to estuarine
ecology. Lectures are complemented with extensive field activities including
trawling aboard the Sea Lab’s research vessels, mucking in the salt marshes of
Dauphin Island, and even snorkeling in St. Andrews Park in Panama City.

The Alabama State Department of Education approves the Discovery Hall
Programs' Marine Science Course and recommends that local systems grant
participating students credit toward either an Advanced or Standard High School

“We are delighted that PNC Financial Services are supporting such an excellent
program in our community,” said Helene Hassell, DISL Foundation’s Executive
Director. “Our mission to educate the public about our treasured marine
resources emphasizes the need for education in our young people. These
students will go on to share what they’ve learned with those around them,
and create a ripple effect of knowledge. PNC is investing in our future by this
generous donation.”

"The surest, most-effective way to provide children with the opportunity to
rise above their circumstances is to create a pathway to success through
education," said Cedric Hatcher, PNC regional president, Gulf Coast. "With these
scholarships provided by PNC, five students who otherwise would not have the
opportunity to attend the DISL Discovery Hall Marine Science Class, will increase
their knowledge and understanding of marine science"
