Volvo Environmental Prize recipient, Dr. Ray Hilborn, Professor at the School of Aquatic and Fishery Sciences at the University of Washington will be featured as the 15th Annual Wiese Lecturer hosted by the University of South Alabama’s Department of Marine Sciences and the Dauphin Island Sea Lab.  The public is invited to attend his talk “The State of the World’s Fisheries: Is it Doom and Gloom or Sustainable Management?”, on December 15, 2010, at 7pm at the University of South Alabama’s Laidlaw Center for Performing Arts, Recital Center.

Dr. Hilborn specializes in natural resource management and conservation.  He teaches courses in conservation, quantitative population dynamics and risk analysis.  He is the co-author of “Quantitative Fisheries Assessment” with Carl Walters, “The Ecological Detective: Confronting Models with Data” with Marc Mangel, and has written over 200 peer-reviewed articles.  Dr. Hilborn serves on several Scientific Editorial Boards and is a member of such distinguished panels as the Scientific Advisory Panel for the President’s Commission on Ocean Policy, The Ocean Studies Board of the National Research Council, and the Commission for the Conservation of Southern Bluefin Tuna.  A member of the Washington Academy of Sciences, the Royal Society of Canada and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, Dr. Hilborn has been honored with the American Fisheries Societies Award of Excellence and the American Institute of Fisheries Research Biologists Outstanding Achievement Award.

Dr. Bob Shipp, Chair of the Department of Marine Sciences at USA, states, “In this era of global concern, but oftentimes hyperbole, about collapsing world fisheries, Dr. Hilborn is a voice of reason, a voice with the backing of hard facts and careful analysis. He has successfully challenged many of the careless predictions made by those whose motives are suspect.”

The Wiese Lecture Series is endowed by a generous gift from the late Peter Wiese and his wife, Marty Wiese of Fairhope, Alabama.  Each year the series brings a preeminent scientist to the University of South Alabama and the Dauphin island Sea Lab, who interacts with students and faculty and presents a lecture for the public on a topic of general interest to marine science.

The Lecture is sponsored by the Department of Marine Science at the University of South Alabama and the Dauphin Island Sea Lab and is open to the public.
